State Representative Jennifer Wortz has voted in favor of a bill that’s aimed at combating deepfake images that can be used to harass or blackmail victims.
House Bill 4047 criminalizes the nonconsensual creation and dissemination of realistic deep fake sexual images.
The legislation allows victims to sue offenders–it also sets criminal penalties, depending on the severity of damages caused by the images.
Wortz said with Artificial Intelligence becoming increasingly advanced and accessible, many people are worried that the production of deep fakes will become a worsening problem. She said nonconsensual Deep fakes cause emotional and financial harm to individuals.
The bill passed the house back in April.
It passed the Senate earlier this month and is awaiting Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s Signature.
