Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed legislation, sponsored by State Senator Joseph Bellino, that designates a section of M-34 in Hillsdale County as the “Deputy Sheriff William Butler Jr. Memorial Highway.”
Bellino’s Senate Bill 70 is now Public Act 10 of 2025. It honors Deputy Butler, who was fatally shot in the line of duty in June 2024.
Butler served as a Hillsdale County deputy for 12 years and was also a veteran of the Iraq war.
Bellino said the “memorial will help ensure his life, service, and sacrifice are never forgotten.”
Memorial signage will be funded by private contributions.
