Woman Charged With Smuggling Drugs Into Prison

A 40-year-old woman from Westland was arrested Thursday for allegedly smuggling drugs into Lakeland Correctional Facility.
Michigan State Police said the woman visited the prison between 3:30 and 4:00 p.m. and was detained during her visit.
She was booked into the Branch County Jail on a felony charge.
Although police have not officially named the woman, jail records indicate Shonda Lecar Ruffin was lodged on one count of smuggling contraband into prison.
Authorities have made a handful of arrests over the past couple of years of people attempting to smuggle drugs into the Lakeland Correctional Facility. Methods have included tossing drug-filled footballs over the fence, using drones to make the delivery, and the more direct route of carrying contraband in during visits to inmates.
