Intoxicated Woman Arrested While Picking Up Students

A Somerset Center woman is due in court after she was arrested for driving intoxicated at Jonesville Elementary School on Tuesday.
Jonesville Police Chief Mike Lance told WCSR News that a woman entered the school to pick up her children around 2:40 pm. Staff called 9-1-1 after detecting the smell of alcohol on the woman.
Lance said the woman exited the building and got into a car. She refused to get out when a police officer approached.
Instead, she drove onto the lawn, entering Adrian Street going the wrong direction.
The suspect was forced to stop as a parked bus loaded with students blocked the street.
37-year-old Stephanie Stidham was taken into custody and lodged in the Hillsdale County Jail, on charges of operating intoxicated and resisting police.
She’s being held without bond at the Hillsdale County Jail and faces arraignment in Hillsdale County District Court.
Lance said a preliminary breathalyzer test indicated she was over the legal limit. Other charges may be issued, pending blood tests.
Jonesville Superintendent Brandon Wheeler issued a statement to families following the incident. He thanked parents and staff members who attempted to detain the suspect until authorities arrived.
