Area Lawmakers Divided On State Budget

Michigan’s new state budget has drawn mixed reactions from lawmakers representing area residents.
State Representative Jennifer Wortz, a Republican from Quincy, supported the measure, citing its focus on accountability, rural healthcare, and infrastructure development.
She praised the budget for saving hundreds of millions of dollars and redirecting funds to priorities that benefit all Michigan residents.
Wortz also highlighted nearly $250 million in grants for rural hospitals and nearly $2 billion allocated for roads and bridges.
In contrast, 16th District State Senator Joseph Bellino, a Republican from Monroe, opposed the budget, criticizing its reliance on higher taxes and cuts to local government services.
Bellino expressed concern over the $960 million in increased taxes, including a new 24% tax on marijuana and the removal of tax relief for small businesses affected by federal reforms. He argued that some of the measures could lead to job losses and jeopardize local services and public safety. In a statement released earlier this week, Bellino said he supported many priorities in the budget but felt that Michigan families and job providers deserved better.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the budget on Tuesday.
