Utility Warns Of Ongoing Scam

Consumers Energy is warning listeners to beware of an ongoing bill-paying scam.
The utility reports that scammers have been contacting customers via phone and email, threatening power shut-offs unless payments are made immediately. The scammers often spoof company phone numbers and insist that their intended victims use prepaid debit or gift cards.
Consumers Energy’s vice president of IT and security, Jim Beechey, emphasized vigilance: He said the crooks are “persistent and determined to con people out of their money.”
Consumers Energy clarified that it does not require specific payment methods, such as prepaid cards, and never asks for credit card information over the phone.
Customers are advised to visit the utility’s website for legitimate payment options.
You can call 800-477-5050 if you suspect you’ve been targeted.
