Commissioners To Discuss Changes To K9 Retirement

The Hillsdale County Board of Commissioners is set to vote on a new policy for the retirement of Sheriff’s Department K9 officers.
The policy aims to formalize the transfer of ownership of retired K9s.
Under the proposed resolution, once a K9 is designated as retired, ownership will transfer to its handler upon the handler’s signing of an agreement. If a handler declines ownership, the K9 will be donated to an approved service organization.
Additionally, the policy calls for waiving the county’s annual dog license fee for the lifetime of any retired K9.
The Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Department currently has three K9 officers.
The resolution was recommended by the Public Safety & Judiciary Committee.
The Commissioners are set to hold their next regular meeting on Tuesday.
