Health Officials Focus On Safe Sleep For Infants

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is raising awareness of safe sleep habits in October to reduce sleep-related infant deaths.
On average, a sleep-related death occurs every two to three days in Michigan.
MDHHS Director Elizabeth Hertel said the awareness campaign is designed to help parents create a safe sleep environment that supports babies’ thriving.
Implementing the American Academy of Pediatrics’ ABCs of Safe Sleep —placing an infant Alone, on their Back, and in a Crib —can significantly reduce risks.
Additional recommendations include removing soft bedding, avoiding overheating, and avoiding the use of seats or couches for routine sleep.
Breastfeeding is encouraged to reduce risks further.
The department emphasizes that a number of deaths could be prevented each year through evidence-based practices.
Parents and caregivers are encouraged to plan and ensure everyone involved in caring for the baby understands safe sleep guidelines. More resources are available online at michigan.gov/mdhhs
