Jonesville’s Road Diet Nearing Completion

Crews have completed marking the lanes along US 12 through downtown Jonesville, as the city’s “Road Diet” nears completion.
City Manager Jeff Gray told WCSR News that the project is about 90 percent complete.
He said the remaining work includes installing traffic sensors in the pavement, along with adjusting the timing of the downtown traffic lights.
Gray said those who park along US 12 are already seeing the safety benefits of the buffer zone created by reducing traffic from four lanes to one in each direction, with a center turn lane.
He said other benefits of the changes will be more evident once traffic cones are removed and the lights are timed properly.
City officials began looking into the “Road Diet,” also known as a traffic calming plan, more than two years ago.
Jonesville is among a number of Michigan cities to undergo the process, which is aimed at improving safety while increasing the visibility and viability of downtown business districts.
The Hillsdale City Council voted earlier this year to move forward with a similar project.
