Michigan Gas Utilities is teaming up with law enforcement agencies to use social media to warn people about utility scams that are spreading.
The collaboration aims to spread the word about the scams that appear to be on the rise.
Crooks are using fake calls and messages to steal money from customers.
The scams are common this time of year, with scammers pretending to be from a utility provider. They may spoof caller IDs to show “Michigan Gas Utilities,” threaten to turn off energy quickly, or ask for immediate payment with prepaid cards, apps like Venmo, or even cryptocurrency. Sometimes, they show up at doors and refuse to show ID.
Michigan Gas officials say customers have already reported losing hundreds of dollars this year. Officials say if you suspect a scam, hang up or close the door!!!
If you’re unsure about a call, email, or message, call MGU directly at 800-401-6402. Contact local police if you’ve been scammed.
