A Reading woman, who was a teacher at a high school in Steuben County, Indiana, is free on bond as she faces charges after two students ingested marijuana edibles that she apparently left in plain sight.
Authorities reported that 49-year-old Debra McGillem, a teacher at Angola High School, is accused of bringing THC-laced candy into a classroom.
The Steuben County Sheriff’s Department said the students ingested what appeared to be candy Thursday afternoon, unaware it contained THC, which is the active ingredient in marijuana.
Additional items containing suspected THC were found in McGillem’s possession.
Detectives interviewed students and McGillem, who drove herself to the sheriff’s office. During the interview, investigators gathered information suggesting McGillem operated a vehicle while impaired.
McGillem was arrested and booked into the Steuben County Jail on felony charges of felony neglect of a dependent, felony possession of a controlled substance on school property, and a misdemeanor count of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. She has since posted $6,500 bond.
The incident remains under investigation and has been reported to the Indiana Department of Child Services.
