Firefighters from six departments battled a blaze that destroyed a home on Lake Somerset Sunday afternoon.
Somerset firefighters were dispatched to 14103 Grandview Drive around 1:00 pm. They called for assistance from the Moscow, Addison, Cambridge, Columbia, Liberty Township, and Jonesville fire departments. Hillsdale City brought an air tank trailer.
Somerset Chief Scott Friess told WCSR News that the large two-story home was partially engulfed in flames when crews arrived. He said an attached garage was fully involved.
Residents of the home evacuated safely. There were no serious injuries.
About sixty firefighters were on the scene for several hours, clearing around 5:00 pm.
Crews returned for a rekindle around 6:00 a.m. Monday.
Friess said the fire remains under investigation. He said a preliminary investigation revealed that hot ashes from a wood-burning stove were placed into an outdoor trash can near the garage.
Residents attempted to douse the flames, but were unsuccessful. The home is a total loss.
