Lindsey’s State Line Survey Bill Headed To Governor

wcsr-dale-news-header-2

A bill to clearly define the border between Michigan and Indiana has passed the state Legislature and is now on its way to Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s desk.

The legislation, introduced by 17th District State Senator Jonathan Lindsey, is aimed at  settling years of confusion caused by unclear state lines. Issues ranging from property ownership to traffic laws have been complicated by the uncertain boundary.

Previous attempts to fix the border stalled, partly because it was difficult to find a company to survey the entire length. Lindsey’s bill offers a solution by letting individual counties handle surveying their part of the border. It also gives them more time to finish the work.

Lindsey said the legislation is “a simple fix that will prevent having to start the process over again from the beginning.”

The Michigan House of Representatives made changes to the bill, which the Senate then approved. The bill was given immediate effect, meaning it can become law quickly once the governor signs it.
