
A number of new laws will take effect in Michigan on January 1st, after Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed 36 bills into law last week.
Senate Bill 23 is aimed at easing the state’s housing shortage by increasing the number of parcels of land that can be divided from a single tract. The number will increase from four to ten.
Senate Bill 136 updates Michigan’s radiation control laws to match the federal Mammography Quality Standards Act. Sponsored by Senator Sarah Anthony, of Lansing, the law sets new minimum training standards for technicians, updates fee structures, and improves safety measures for breast cancer screening. Anthony highlighted that early detection of breast cancer saves lives and stressed the importance of maintaining high standards for screening procedures.
Senate Bills 512 and 513 focus on Michigan’s liquor laws. The bills will allow breweries to sell nonalcoholic beer and share samples for research purposes. They’ll also permit college-branded alcohol packaging and advertising.
Senate Bill 595 deals with the Michigan-Indiana border. Sponsored by Senator Jonathan Lindsey, of Coldwater, the law allows the Michigan-Indiana State Line Commission to continue funding programs that survey and mark the border more accurately. The legislation also allows individual counties to hire their own surveyors.
House Bill 4543 improves the Home Heating Credit, which helps families pay for winter heating costs. Sponsored by Representative. Bill Schuette Jr., of Midland, the law updates the inflation adjustment used to calculate the credits.
