Community Foundation Presents Grant In Memory Of Beloved Educator

The Hillsdale County Community Foundation has announced the winner of the Kristin Townsend Warren Grant. The award was given on what would have been Kristin’s birthday, January 6th, to honor her life and work.
This year’s winner is Clay Schiman, who received a $1,000 grant to support a project at Hillsdale High School. The project involves buying Guardian Caps for the football team. The soft helmet covers help protect players during practice.
Kristin Townsend Warren was a beloved teacher who taught health, physical education, and science for 25 years with Hillsdale Community Schools. Kristin also worked at Horizon Alternative High School. She was known for her caring nature, strong connection with students, and dedication to the community. Her family says she loved football, and her three sons — Kirk, Kraig, and Konnor — all played for the Hornets and even helped coach the team. Kristin was also a “team mom,” organizing meals and supporting the football program and booster club.
Olivia Lewis, the school’s athletic trainer, is studying Guardian Caps as part of her doctoral research. Her work shows that the helmet covers can help reduce head impacts and may lower the risk of concussions when used during football practice.
The grant supports local students and athletes, just as Kristin did. The Community Foundation says the award continues her legacy of caring, community, and support for young people.
