The auditorium at Jonesville High School was packed Monday night as residents and officials discussed a proposed 1,300-acre solar farm by Ranger Power.
The Fayette Township Board listened to public comments about the project, which has sparked strong opinions among those who oppose it.
A number of residents expressed worries about the project. Concerns included potential negative impacts on wildlife and water sources.
Some cited worries that the panels will hurt local hunting opportunities.
Others claimed that a separate solar farm in the township has already lowered property values.
Longtime residents said they’re concerned the panels will destroy the rural views.
A local realtor shared that some clients are hesitant to buy property near solar farms.
Among those who spoke in opposition to the project were Republican Gubernatorial candidates Tom Leonard and Anthony Hudson, Hillsdale City Councilman Jacob Bruns, and Former Hillsdale County Prosecutor Neal Brady, who now works with Hillsdale College. State Representative Jennifer Wortz encouraged residents to share their concerns with the Michigan Public Service Commission or her office so their voices can be heard in Lansing.
The project will be discussed again next Monday at the Fayette Township Planning Commission meeting, scheduled for 7:00 pm in the Jonesville High School Auditorium.
