There’s been a settlement in a lawsuit over the assault of an inmate at the Hillsdale County Jail.
In January of last year, former Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Deputy Ronald Leggitt was sentenced to seven days in jail and two years’ probation for assaulting an inmate in 2021. He pleaded guilty to misconduct in office and aggravated assault for pepper-spraying Sabrina Cain while she was restrained.
According to a social media post from the Ven Johnson Law Firm, Hillsdale County has agreed to pay $295,000 to settle Cain’s lawsuit.
Her attorneys said Cain was restrained in a chair during a mental health crisis. She was pepper-sprayed repeatedly at close range.
Along with the jail time and probation, Leggitt gave up his MCOLES certification, which is required to work as a police officer in Michigan.
