2026 could be a pivotal year for the City of Hillsdale. Along with midterm elections at the state & federal levels, voters in the City will elect a Mayor and four members of council this year.
With more than half of the voting seats up for election, the balance of power on the council could be significantly swayed.
Councilmembers have struggled for years with finding ways to fund much-needed street repairs.
While progress has been made in the decade since David Mackie was named City Manager, officials are wrangling with growing opposition to Special Assessment Districts, which have funded several street reconstruction projects in recent years.
Council members elected this year will also be involved in the process of naming a replacement for Mackie, who currently serves the dual role of City Manager and Director of the Board of Public Utilities.
At the end of his current contract, in three years, Mackie will step down from the City Manager position to focus solely on his duties at the BPU.
The deadline to file as a candidate for the mayor’s seat or the council seat in your ward is April 21st.
