Hillsdale County District Court Judge Megan Stiverson has announced that the Veterans’ Court will be back in operation beginning next month.
Stiverson said, “The Veterans Affairs Office was able to find funding to keep the program going.”
The program uses a part-time probation officer to provide special services to veterans and active-duty service members who have had run-ins with the law. The goal is to help individuals stay accountable while also recognizing that veterans often need different types of support than traditional offenders.
Stiverson said, “With jail overcrowding and probation being the main option in most cases, having dedicated probation staff is more important than ever.”
