Governor Declares Conservation Officer Appreciation Day

wcsr-dale-news-header-2
Sunday is Conservation Officer Appreciation Day in Michigan.
The day is set aside to honor the 250 Michigan Department of Natural Resources officers who patrol the state’s 83 counties.
Among them is Officer Cody Longrey, a Coldwater native and 2025 graduate of the DNR Conservation Training Academy, who was recently assigned to the permanent post in Hillsdale County.
The proclamation from the Governor’s office recognizes the fully licensed law enforcement officers for their unique role in protecting Michigan’s natural resources and ensuring public safety in environments ranging from urban centers to the Great Lakes.
DNR Director Scott Bowen said, “Michigan is a stronger, safer state thanks to the tireless efforts and dedication our conservation officers show every day.” The recognition comes as a new generation of officers begins field duties across the state.
In 2025, Michigan conservation officers interacted with more than 377,000 people. Their work over the past year included diverse emergency situations, including the aftermath of a shooter attack at a Grand Blanc church and managing safety barriers during the March 2025 ice storm in northern Michigan.
Beyond enforcement, the DNR reported that officers certified over 49,000 individuals in hunting, boating, and off-road vehicle safety programs last year.
