Michigan House Passes Bill To Protect Race Tracks

wcsr-dale-news-header-2
35th District State Representative Jennifer Wortz is one of several sponsors who signed on to legislation that aims to shield race tracks from certain lawsuits.
The Michigan House of Representatives approved the new bill on Thursday.
The legislation says that property owners or residents within a five-mile radius of a racing track, like Butler Motor Speedway, cannot sue the track owner or operator if the track was built before they bought or developed their property.
The protection applies even if the track changes its size, technology, or the type of racing, as long as those changes are lawful.
The bill does not exempt tracks from following environmental laws or health and safety rules. It covers all claims filed after the bill becomes law, even if the issues happened before.
The bill, which now heads to the Senate for review, is aimed at protecting the racing industry and local events.
