The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is warning animal owners to stay alert and take precautions against avian influenza as wild birds migrate this spring.
State Veterinarian Nora Wineland said the spring migration will increase the risk of spreading the highly contagious virus, which thrives in cool, damp conditions.
Avian Influenza spreads easily among animals and can be transmitted through contact with wild birds, infected animals, equipment, and clothing. The disease can also affect people, but the CDC says the health risk to the public remains low. People should handle meat and eggs safely and avoid consuming raw milk.
Owners can protect their animals by preventing contact with wild birds, limiting visitors, washing hands, disinfecting gear, securing feed, and allowing downtime between farm visits.
Report suspected cases of avian flu in animals to MDARD.
Unusual bird behavior or deaths should be reported to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources via the Eyes in the Field app or by calling 517-336-5030.
