MPSC Approves $276.6 Million Increase for Consumers Energy

wcsr-dale-news-header-2
The Michigan Public Service Commission has approved a $276.6 million rate hike for Consumers Energy.
The hike, approved Friday, means the average residential rate will increase by about 8.9%.
Consumers Energy initially asked for a 13% rate increase. However, the Michigan Attorney General’s Office argued that the increase should be much smaller, at only 3.5%.
The new rates will go into effect on May 1st.
This is the second big increase in just two years, following a $154 million hike last year.
Since 2020, the MPSC has approved nearly $800 million in rate increases for Consumers Energy. The company will be eligible to ask for more rate hikes as early as June.
Consumers Energy supplies electricity to about 1.9 million Michigan homes.
