Commissioners Allocate Opioid Funds For Treatment Program

wcsr-dale-news-header-2
The Hillsdale County Board of Commissioners has allocated a portion of opioid settlement money toward a program to fight drug addiction without adding to the jail population.
At their latest meeting, the Commissioners voted unanimously to spend $94,500 to cover the cost of a specialized drug treatment program at the TRI-CAP residential facility in Saginaw.
Over the next 10 months, the county will send three people per month to the facility for intensive treatment.
The program helps people who are struggling with addictions to heroin and methamphetamine.
Commissioner Brad Benzing said the program is a vital step for the community. He said that while opioid use is a major concern, most people facing addiction in Hillsdale County are struggling with methamphetamine.
It focuses on teaching people how to avoid triggers and stay sober. It also helps them find jobs and housing after they complete the program.
County officials hope the move will save money in the long run by leading to fewer repeat crimes and fewer days spent in the local jail.
