The Hillsdale City Council voted unanimously Monday night to move forward with three major street projects.
The council awarded bids for improvements on Arch Avenue, South Street, and Oak Street.
Parrish Excavating of Quincy was awarded the contract for Arch Avenue. The project, totaling $377,907 with contingencies, covers about a third of a mile between Mechanic Street and Carleton Road. Work will include road reconstruction, storm sewer installation, and curb repairs.
Excell Paving Plus of Coldwater secured the bids for the remaining two streets. The South Street project, located between South Broad and South West streets, will cost $367,071. It features a full replacement of the asphalt and upgrades to sidewalk ramps to meet ADA accessibility standards.
Oak Street will also see improvements between Willow and East College streets. That project, totaling $388,104, involves resurfacing over half a mile of road and additional sidewalk ramp upgrades.
City engineers noted that because these are “unit price” contracts, the final costs will depend on the exact amount of materials used. The approved totals include contingency funds to cover any unexpected issues found during construction.
The scale of the initial plans for all three projects was reduced after property owners successfully petitioned the city to eliminate “Special Assessment,” which would have charged nearby homeowners for a portion of the construction costs.
