Rising Prices Causing Motorists To Delay Fillups, Risk Damage

wcsr-dale-news-header-1-2
Rising costs at the pump are driving many Michigan motorists to take a costly risk with their vehicles.
According to a new survey from AAA Michigan, about 48% of drivers in the state admit to waiting until their fuel light comes on—or until the tank is nearly empty—before stopping to refuel. While many residents use the tactic to delay spending, automotive experts warn that the habit can lead to mechanical failure.
In most modern cars, the fuel pump is located inside the gas tank. The gasoline acts as a coolant for the pump, which operates at high temperatures. When the fuel level drops too low, the pump can overheat. It can also suck in debris from the bottom of the tank, causing it to clog.
Replacing a damaged fuel pump is a complex job that can cost $1,000 or more in parts and labor. To avoid the expenses, AAA recommends that drivers keep their tanks at least one-quarter full at all times.
