Consumers Energy Seeks Massive Rate Hike

wcsr-dale-news-header-1-2
Consumers Energy submitted a massive $456 million electric rate hike request to state regulators on Tuesday.
If it’s approved, the request would result in a 9.8% monthly bill increase for nearly 1.9 million residential customers.
The utility company says the extra money is needed for its 2027 Reliability Action Plan.
According to the Michigan Attorney General’s Office, the utility is also seeking a 12-month surcharge of $25 million, along with an additional $52 million over three years for storm restoration expenses, and the continuation and expansion of the Investment Recovery Mechanism, which was approved as part of an earlier rate increase.
The latest request comes just two months after a separate $276.6 million rate increase took effect on May 1st.
This quick succession of hike requests has sparked public frustration as families are already dealing with inflation and the rising cost of everyday living.
