Motorists who are prone to driving a bit fast may want to ease off the gas pedal this month.
State and local police are stepping up speed enforcement throughout July to keep summer travel safe. The statewide crackdown is part of a goal to reduce traffic deaths by 30% by the year 2030.
The special enforcement campaign is funded by federal traffic safety grants.
The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning reports that speeding is a main cause of deadly accidents. Officials say driving too fast makes it harder to react to trouble and makes crashes much more violent. According to state data, Michigan had over 22,000 speed-related crashes in 2024.
Officials say slowing down is one of the easiest ways to save lives. Roads are especially busy this time of year with families, young drivers, and bicyclists.
Extra police patrols will be on the roads all month long. The campaign is aimed at urging drivers to obey the posted speed limits, stay patient behind the wheel, and leave a little early so you don’t feel rushed.
