The state Attorney General’s office is urging Michigan residents to report their extended power outages and check on overdue utility credits.
Tens of thousands of homes and businesses were left in the dark, following Friday’s severe storms that brought down trees and power lines.
Under Michigan Law, utility customers are eligible for credits, depending on the length of the outage.
Utility credits for long outages are usually automatic. They’re based on how long the power was out or how often a customer lost power over a 12-month period. However, the Attorney General’s office is urging residents to use the department’s online form if their credits are late or if they want to report their experiences.
The form is available at michigan.gov/ag
State officials are also warning residents to watch out for post-disaster repair scams.
Officials advise getting written quotes for any repair work and carefully reading the fine print on all contracts.
