Hillsdale County Clerk Abe Dane has released a statement reassuring residents that local voting equipment is secure ahead of the upcoming August 4th primary election.
Responding to Thursday’s presidential address on election security, Dane emphasized that the county’s ballot tabulators are rigorously tested, programmed locally, and are not connected to the internet.
Dane said, “Claims to the contrary often stem from a misunderstanding of election administration.”
Dane also addressed calls to return to hand-counted ballots. He said electronic tabulators are required under Michigan law. Returning to hand-counting would require major legislative changes and would require separating city, township, and school elections to simplify ballot structures.
Dane urged voters to contact local clerks with election-related questions.
