A Litchfield city council member is facing a recall effort initiated by a fellow member of the council.
Melinda Dinwiddie filed petition language with the Hillsdale County Clerk’s office on Monday, to recall Council Member Steve Schlumm.
The petition claims that in July and August of this year, Schlumm intentionally damaged city park property after being warned by the city attorney not to alter park grounds without council approval. According to the filing, Schlumm tilled up ground, planted trees and flowers, laid mulch, and painted concrete bases without permission.
The Hillsdale County Election Commission will hold a clarity hearing on Monday, September 14th, to decide whether the petition’s wording is clear and factual.
If approved, Dinwiddie would be required to collect at least 128 valid signatures from registered Litchfield voters to trigger a recall election in May of 2027.
