With Michigan’s early antlerless season and the Liberty Hunt taking center stage this week, hunters are stepping into the woods under a freshly updated set of regulations for 2026.
The headline adjustment from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is the official end of the Limited Firearms Deer Zone, formerly known as the “Shotgun Zone.” Beginning September 12th, rifle options and all standard legal firearms are permitted across the entire Lower Peninsula.
Schedule shifts are also taking effect. The early antlerless firearm push and the youth & adaptive Liberty Hunts will launch this weekend, running Saturday and Sunday September 12th & 13th.
Looking ahead to winter, the December firearm and muzzleloader windows have been trimmed to a three-day stretch, December 4th through 6th. The late antlerless season picks up right afterward on December 7th, while the extended January hunting dates have been eliminated.
To modernize tagging, the DNR has introduced a digital eHarvest option within the Michigan DNR Hunt Fish app. Standard paper tags remain completely acceptable, but no matter which style you select, reporting your harvest within 72 hours remains mandatory.
