After being shut down for six weeks, the government will reopen now that President Donald Trump has signed a spending bill narrowly passed by the House of Representatives on Wednesday.
In a statement released after the vote, Fifth District Congressman Tim Walberg called the bill “A responsible deal that gets the government running again for the American people.”
He added that the bill will ensure that federal workers, including air traffic controllers, law enforcement officers, and military personnel, receive their paychecks.
The deal also allows lawmakers to continue working on nine other funding bills for the upcoming fiscal year.
Walberg called the government shutdown “unnecessary,” saying it disrupted air travel, essential services, and nutrition programs.
At 43 days, the shutdown was the longest in US history.
Over the past six weeks, Democrats and Republicans have placed the blame on each other for the disruption that affected millions of Americans.
