Hillsdale Township firefighters and Michigan Department of Natural Resources fire crews continued battling a muck fire in a Cambria Township swamp Tuesday morning.
Crews dug and trenched just over half an acre of swamp land in the 4200 block of Steamburg Road.
They determined the affected area was slightly larger than initially believed.
Crews were initially called to the area Monday afternoon to rekindle a marsh fire that had started 10 days earlier and had reached the roots, where it continued burning underground.
A team from the DNR’s Brighton Field Office, along with personnel from the Rose Lake and Cass City stations, was on scene.
Michigan DNR Forest Fire Supervisor Shane Crawford said he believes the fire has been fully extinguished. Crews will return today to confirm that it’s out.
