Wortz Bill To Protect Parents Right To Second Opinion

State Rep. Jennifer Wortz has introduced legislation aimed at protecting parents’ right to seek a second medical opinion for their children.
House Bill 5163 would prevent parents from being accused of child neglect if they seek or follow advice from a second healthcare professional following an initial diagnosis.
Wortz said parents have the right to ensure their child receives the best care, especially after receiving concerning diagnoses.
She said Child Protective Services and medical professionals shouldn’t be able to take legal action against parents who are seeking the best treatment for their children.
Wortz said there have been instances where parents have faced legal action after consulting different doctors. She argued that legal protections are necessary to prevent parents from being unfairly targeted.
She called it “ absurd” that laws are needed to protect the right to seek second opinions.
HB 5163 has been referred to the House Committee on Families and Veterans for review.
