Michigan’s legislature avoided a prolonged government shutdown early Wednesday by passing a one-week continuation budget to keep state operations running. The $1.56 billion stopgap provides funding through October 8th as lawmakers work to finalize the full budget.
State lawmakers have agreed on a longer-term budget; however, the one-week stopgap is aimed at giving them time to create a number of required resolutions.
The agreement followed hours of tense negotiations and a brief shutdown at midnight Tuesday, before the compromise was finally reached.
Meanwhile, the federal government officially entered a partial shutdown after Congress failed to pass a funding bill. Senate Republicans attempted to pass a short-term extension.
However, the continuing resolution was blocked by Democrats, who objected to being sidelined in shutdown talks.
The Senate is expected to vote again Today, with additional votes possible over the weekend.
