16th District State Senator Joseph Bellino has introduced legislation that would allow homeschooled students to participate in extracurricular activities at their local public schools.
Bellino said, “Parents have the right to educate their children as they see fit. At the same time, their children should be able to take part in extracurricular activities through the schools that use their tax dollars.”
Michigan currently permits public school districts to restrict or ban homeschooled students from participating in athletics. The Michigan High School Athletic Association requires homeschooled students to enroll in at least 66% of a full course load at a public school for athletic eligibility.
Senate Bill 589 would prohibit school districts from banning homeschooled students from participating in extracurricular activities, including sports, theater, band, orchestra, and debate teams. To qualify, students would need to reside within the district offering the activity.
The bill has been referred to the House Committee on Education.
