State Departments Raise Awareness Of Invasive Species

wcsr-dale-news-header-2
This week is National Invasive Species Awareness Week across the country.
The week aims to raise awareness about harmful plants, animals, and diseases that threaten Michigan’s environment and economy.
The State’s Invasive Species Program is a joint effort by several agencies, including the Departments of Agriculture and Rural Development; Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy; and Natural Resources. The program works with local groups, universities, and volunteers to detect and manage invasives across the state.
In 2025, the program surveyed over 110,000 acres for invasive species and took action on nearly 36,000 acres.
Officials urge people to help stop the spread by cleaning equipment and vehicles after outdoor activities, not moving firewood, and reporting sightings of invasive species. Public involvement has been crucial in detecting new infestations, including the spotted lanternfly.
