A Michigan State Trooper jumped into action to help a choking driver.
According to a report from MLive, the incident began when a trooper approached a stopped vehicle. The driver quickly got out of the car with his hands clutched around his neck. The trooper immediately realized the man was actively choking and could not breathe.
Acting fast, the trooper pulled the driver away from the car and performed the Heimlich maneuver. After five or six abdominal thrusts, the object blocking the man’s airway dislodged and fell to the ground.
The driver began breathing on his own again and was able to cough to clear the rest of his throat, police said. Paramedics arrived shortly after to check on the man. After an evaluation, he was given a clean bill of health and did not require further hospital treatment.
State police noted that the situation serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of training, in light of how quickly a medical emergency can occur.
