State Representative Jennifer Wortz has introduced a new bill package that she says is aimed at making auto insurance more affordable for Michigan drivers.
House Bills 5886 through 5889 are sponsored by Representative Wortz, along with Representatives Nancy Jenkins-Arno and Joe Tate.
Michigan currently requires drivers to carry $250,000 in personal injury protection coverage, the highest minimum in the country. The new bills would make it easier for drivers to choose lower coverage levels and keep their plans without having to reselect coverage each time they renew their insurance.
The legislation would allow insurance companies to offer different coverage options across the state.
Wortz said Michigan residents are paying some of the highest auto insurance costs in the nation. “
The rates remain high, despite reforms in 2019
Wortz said requiring people to buy five times more coverage than other states is not reasonable.
The bills would also cut Michigan’s bodily injury liability limits in half, bringing the limits in line with those of other states.
The bills have been sent to the House Committee on Insurance for review.
