A Hillsdale native whose name inspired a Grammy-winning Michigan rock band has died.
The Detroit Free Press reported that Gretna Van Fleet, who grew up in Hillsdale before spending much of her life in Frankenmuth, passed away Monday at a senior living facility. She was 95.
Her connection to rock history began in 2012 when three teenage brothers and a friend formed a band. Looking for a band name, they adapted the name of the longtime family friend into “Greta Van Fleet.” Within five years, the group had achieved international fame for its throwback hard-rock style.
A lifelong musician herself, Van Fleet spent her career working as a medical secretary.
The announcement of her death comes as the band recently revealed plans to return to touring following a two-year hiatus.
