A local tradition that brought together nature lovers and competitive hunters for three decades has come to an end.
The organizers of the Osseo Heritage Day & Great Mushroom Hunt announced this week that the festival is officially retiring after 30 years.
Known to fans as “The Shroom Crew,” the family behind the event said they felt it was the right time to close this chapter.
What started as a simple passion for morel mushrooms grew into a major community gathering. Over the years, the event drew people from across the region to Osseo, a small village in Hillsdale County. While the festival featured a contest to find the largest mushroom, organizers say it was always about more than winning.
They said it was about “getting people outside, bringing families together in nature, and sharing the excitement of the hunt.”
The festival leaves behind a long history of success. In 2025 alone, hunters brought in more than 150 pounds of morels.
