As summer nears, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is urging people to stay away from foam on lakes, rivers, and streams.
Health officials say the foam may contain harmful chemicals called PFAS, which are linked to health problems like high cholesterol and liver damage.
The foam can also contain bacteria, viruses, and harmful algae.
People who come into contact with foam should rinse off or take a bath right away.
While skin usually blocks the chemicals, there’s a risk of accidentally swallowing foam or its contents if not rinsed.
Pet owners should keep animals from touching or swallowing foam.
Those with questions about the latest alert can call the MDHHS Environmental Health Hotline at 800-648-6942.
